Hi there,
Last Thursday was Data Privacy day. Initiated with the signing of the first international data protection treaty, the celebration became the opportunity to raise data privacy awareness.
The level of education on the matter seemingly improved, and it seems data privacy is joining the corporate mainstream. Public reactions, such as the recent WhatsApp privacy policy backlash, show that individuals are willing to take action to mitigate privacy risks.
However, education around privacy will undoubtedly remain on the agenda in the years to come. With the standardization of deep learning technologies, more ethical and privacy questions are bound to arise.
In their 2021 predictions, Gartner's analysts reported that by 2023, "20% of successful account takeover attacks will use deepfakes to socially engineer users to turn over sensitive data or move money into criminal accounts". As recently reported by Cybersecurity company Gemini, the discussions and attempts to use deepfakes (synthetic media) to bypass virtual identity verification processes have already started to multiply.
Organizations will have to be accountable for the technology they develop and make sure they can protect their customer privacy from the new threats that emerge.
This month, we prepared resources on data privacy, real-life examples of synthetic data application (for good), and interesting reads from the community.
Happy reading!
